Ken was born in Hot Springs, left after high school, and returned in 1990. He started running for fitness and recreation in 1966, spent 20 years in the U.S. Marine Corps getting to run in lots of different places in the U.S. and in fun locations like Japan, Okinawa, Philippines, Hong Kong, South Korea, Norway (above the Arctic Circle), Spain, Israel, and Germany. Ken likes to run as transportation or to sightsee in a new place, and he loves to run trails to feel close to nature and to let his brain relax. He often runs/walks with his wife, Tracy, and they enjoy biking as well. They started doing Monday and Wednesday trail runs in the Hot Springs National Park in the mid 1990’s because a non-runner friend wanted a place for her 12 year old daughter to run safely with other kids. When the kids all grew up and moved on, Ken and Tracy just kept having the bi-weekly trail runs for whomever would show up. With the group runs, Ken gets to see some runners go from being uncertain about it to being advocates.
“I’m old, so I’ve made lots of mistakes that I hope others can learn from, and I’m slow, so no one gets left behind on one of our trail runs.” – Ken
I moved to HS in 2013 not knowing anyone. In 2016, I was going to run my first 5K with the Window Mart team so I went to the Spa Pacers Fall Clinic and fell in love with running and found the best of friends that seem more like family than friends.
The Spa Pacers are one of the nicest, most inspirational, encouraging and inclusive group I have ever had the pleasure to know. Absolutely best of the best people.
There is absolutely no group that I have ever been a part of that is more encouraging and supportive than the Spa Pacers. Whether you are a walker or a runner, fast or slow, you are welcomed and encouraged to participate. I love the Spa Pacers!
